Jet, an Alsatian dog, was the first to be used by Civil Defense forces during the London bombings. Jet would go on to save some 50 lives and recovered the bodies of countless others killed in the air raids.
Needless to say, Jet became a celebrity, and deservedly so. After his service he was used to train other dogs who were donated form kennels and households throughout Britain to serve on the Home Front and in combat zones around the world. After the war, he was returned to his owner and lived out his days as a king.

This is Lt. Andrew D. Marshall. His plan was shot down over Greece before the Allied invasion. He got away with just a few cuts and bruises despite the fact that the only thing left from his plane was the engine and him. Greeks hid him from the Nazis and when British troops parachuted into Greece, he joined up with them.
That’s a pretty amazing story.
